Floor Joint Systems

Floor Joint issues are the cause of many resin flooring and car park deck system ‘failures’ that are in fact generally nothing to do with the resin floor system, or car park deck waterproofing system that has been selected and installed, but the joints are the major point of weakness and so this is where a lot of potential problems start – and therefore this is also where they can be prevented!

Floor Joint Systems
Anybody can make an expansion joint appear watertight in cross-section. However, joints leak at changes in plane, direction and where dissimilar joint materials meet.

Successful projects with expansion joints that don't leak are characterized by a collaborative commitment by the owners professional team (Architect and Engineer, Main Contractor, the Joint System Manufacturer (EMSEAL – NCC in the UK), and the Specialist Installation Contractor, to think, design, detail, specify, construct, fabricate, and install three-dimensional solutions.

The process begins at design with visualization by the responsible professional consultant with Emseal – NCC, to consider the expansion joint locations, layout and their impact on all other adjacent materials and areas, - This includes the relationship and impact in the construction works, Floor Joint system installation and of course in service.

This visualization is aided by the use of simple isometric line sketches of joint layouts which reveal possible adverse situations or conditions that can then be designed-out, simplified, or for which details must be developed. The consultant then supplements the usual cross-sections with Emseal-NCC’s axonometric details of conditions involving changes in plane, direction and between any dissimilar materials.

To these conditions, Emseal-NCC furnishes axonometric CAD details showing their Joint Systems adaptation to these conditions. These should be confirmed as watertight at all agreed upon changes in plane, direction, and intersections. The final isometric layout(s) and all cross-section and axonometric details then become part of the project specifications and working drawings.

Before and during construction the Main Contractors' role is to elevate the place the expansion joints typically occupy in the works programme and Critical Path. ALL trades must be held accountable for their work in relation to expansion joints. The joints, for example, must be protected from construction traffic damage and cannot become a place to accumulate construction tolerances.

The expansion joint subcontractor must commit to taking relevant final field measurements from which the manufacturer (EMSEAL) can fabricate and furnish factory-welded, warranted assemblies to install into the relevant joint locations.

This collaborative approach is not just theory. It is a practice that has resulted in the successful execution of watertight expansion joints on new and retrofit projects on structures of every type in the USA, and now also in the UK exclusively with NCC, and around the world.

Successful projects include the American National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, to the enormous, newly constructed mixed-use development Atlantic Station in Atlanta, to the retrofit of FedEx Field – the Washington Redskins Stadium, and the newly constructed Citizens Bank of Philadelphia’s Phillies Ballpark Stadium. Authoritative and well respected owners, their Architects and Consulting Engineers, plus their Main Contactors that are increasingly working in this way with EMSEAL and our agents, plus trained specialist installation contractors are proving this approach possible and practical again and again.

Car park deck joint systems can be amongst the most challenging types of floor joints. This is because the Joint Systems in car park decks can also have to accommodate: the vehicle traffic, thermal movement (e.g. from sunlight on the exposed top deck), prevent water ingress to the structure (e.g. from basement deck joints), prevent water penetration to the structure and other cars or facilities below the top and intermediate decks, and provide fire resistance to the joints.

So that is all very easy then!
Seriously these are engineering challenges in both new car park deck construction and for their refurbishment. Compromises will be made and the potential for future issues, problems and costs are very high for everybody involved.
